Description
At one time, in the early years of our country, shop keepers used visual trade signs to catch the attention of people walking along the sidewalks. Many people were illiterate at the time, so the signs or figures showed them what was sold inside. Since the Native Americans were the first ones to introduce tobacco to the Europeans, the 3-dimensional carved figures became advertising icons for shop owners who sold tobacco. This particular carving is flat and has an elaborate headdress with feathers. It was found in the tourist town of Slade, Kentucky.
