Artist's Description

Piedras Blancas Light Station was built, just north of San Simeon between 1874 and 1875, to aid in navigating the rocky coast of California. Originally it stood 100 feet tall, but a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in 1948 resulted in the top three floors being removed for safety. The tower now stands at only 70 feet. (You can find the historical lens portion in the community of Cambria, California, some miles to the south.) In January of 2017, former President Obama, expanded the Coastal National Monument territory to include Piedras Blancas Light. Piedras Blancas means "white rocks" in Spanish. The rocky area, and the small beaches are an important wildlife sanctuary. The largest elephant seal rockery on the west coast can be found below, and to the south of the lighthouse. We go there several times a year to see the gigantic males lumber along the beach, and to see the young males learn to spar with each other. We go again in December, to see the new born pups nurse with their moms.

About Art Block Collections

Art Block Collections

As fifth generation Californian, I mostly specialize in California photography. I am are inspired by the landscapes and seascapes of the Pacific Coast and its beach communities. However, my galleries also show an eclectic mix of images with a variety of subjects and places. When I visit an area, I try to tell the story of that area with images. I may take the “big” image of the location, but we will also look for what is overlooked, for the things that make an area unique and finish the story. I often use close cropping and square format to zero in on a subject, making a tiny piece of the whole become the new focus. I like to capture details such as color, patterns and textures. I am also drawn to nostalgia, vintage,...
