Artist's Description

The San Simeon Pier was preceded by two other structures. One wharf was built on the point in 1852 and was used during whaling times. After the whaling industry died out in the area another wharf was built and placed where it is now. In 1878, then Senator William Randolph Hearst (of Hearst Castle fame), bought the property and built a new wharf. He laid a rail line on top of it to transport supplies and goods to his warehouses on the shore. Years later, Hearst gave the wharf and some of the beach to the county of San Luis Obispo. The county built its own pleasure pier in 1957, which you see today. The wooden pier is small, only 850 feet long and 12 feet wide. It stands 20 feet above the waves and the sandy shore.

About Art Block Collections

I may take the “big” image of the location, but we will also look for what is overlooked, for the things that make an area unique and finish the story. I often use close cropping and square format to zero in on a subject, making a tiny piece of the whole become the new focus. I like to capture details such as color, patterns and textures. I am also drawn to nostalgia, vintage,...
