Description
The Alcatraz Island Light was the first lighthouse built on the west coast of the United States. The original building and tower, built in 1854, was destroyed in the great San Francisco earthquake of 1909. This cement tower is what is left from the second lighthouse built between 1909-1912. Alcatraz Island is well known as a prison. It first housed prisoners from the civil war in 1861. The prison stting was ideal because it was in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, and was surrounded by swift ocean water currents. The historic lighthouse is located at the southern end of the island, right next to the cell-house. This image was taken on a very foggy day when as the American flag was whipping in the wind.
