Description
Mission San Antonio is located in a remote area of Monterey County of California, near the small town of Jolon. It was the 3rd mission of 21 missions built by the Spanish padres in what was Alta, California. The padres felt the church was a place to honor god and should be as elaborate as possible. They used plants and berries to create the dyes for painting on the walls of the church. Many of the designs were copied from churches in Spain and Mexico. They also used geometric designs, some taken from the basket designs of the Native Americans, Several of the churches had a trompe l'oeil effect where the walls were painted to look like marble, with architectural details like columns and arches. This painting is a reproduction, however, it is an example of the work that was done. The arched doorway leads into the church. The arch is decorated with stylized flowers and vines.
