Description
Mission San Francisco de Solano, nick-named Mission Sonoma, was the 21st and the last mission built in California by the Spanish Franciscan padres. It is the farthest north of the chain of missions and was built because the Russians had established Fort Ross on the coast. It was the only mission that was constructed under Mexican rule, after Mexico gained independence from Spain. The mission only lasted 11 years. In 1833, the Mexican governor closed all of the missions and Mission Sonona became a parish church. In 1846, a small group of Americans started a rebellion (called the Bear Flag Rebellion) against the Mexican government. They wanted to make California an independent republic. The rebellion was short-lived because the US military stepped in and occupied the area. California was declared a state in 1850. Eventually, Mission Sonoma deteriorated until nothing was left. A small adobe chapel was built on the site of the original mission, and in 1913 a new mission was reconstructed.
