Description
Mission San Juan Bautista was founded in 1791. It was the 15th of 21 missions built by the Franciscan padres in Alta California. Although Mission San Juan Bautista sits on the notorious San Andreas Fault, it was destroyed by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake which sits on a different fault. This view is of the reconstructed bell wall which holds two of the original bells of the mission. In Spanish architecture, a bell wall is called a campanairo. The bell wall usually adjoins the church and has cut-out niches for holding the bells.
