Description
Mission San Rafael was the 20th mission built by the Franciscan padres in an effort to expand the Spanish holdings in California, and to bring religion to the natives. It was built in 1817 and named for its patron saint, Arcangel Rafael, God's Healing Messenger. It was meant to be a helper mission and a hospital for the sick of Mission Delores in San Francisco. After the Mexican secularization, the mission was falling down and eventually vanished. By 1909 only a mission bell marked the site. Today, you will find a replica building, built in 1949, of the original mission in downtown San Raphael California.
