Description
There are only about 3,000 endangered sea otters left in California. Morro Bay is one of the best places to view these marine mammals. They float in the calm waters of the bay, frolicking, floating, hunting, and raising their young pups. This image is of a mother and her almost grown juvenile. Juveniles stay with their moms for about 8 months, until they are no longer nursing. At that age, they are full independent and can hunt and feed themselves.Otters float so easily because they have some of the densest fur in the animal kingdom. According to Audubon Magazine, they have over 600,000 hairs per square inch, while we have only about 1000,000 hairs per square inch.
