Description
Once upon a time, people used to travel by horseback. They needed a place to tie up their horses to keep the animals from wandering away. Hitching posts were common in the 1800's. There are still quite a few of these quaint equines along the sidewalks of the French Quarter of New Orleans today. The horse heads are made of cast iron and are embedded in concrete. They are usually painted black. This one is missing the ring that would have been attached behind its mouth.
