Description
The Piedras Blancas Light Station sits on 20 acres of land facing the Pacific Ocean near San Simeon, California. When built in 1875, the conical tower stood 100 feet tall instead of the 70 feet you see today. An earthquake in 1948 caused the removal of the top three floors, including the watch tower landing and the lens, which is on display in the nearby town of Cambria. The brick tower sits on a polygonal base and has a 25 foot inside diameter, which tappers to 12 feet at the top. A fifty foot tall replica water tower is on its left and houses electricl equipment. The lighthouse is in the process of being restored, with plans to reunite the lantern with the tower.
