Description
Mission Santa Clara de Asis was the 8th mission built in California by Spanish Franciscan padres. Their purpose was to expand Spanish territory, and to bring religion to the native American Indians. It was the first church to honor a woman, Clara de Asis, from the order of Poor Clares. Santa Clara mission was dedicated in 1825 by Father Juniper Serra. Through the years Mission Santa Clara was plagued with floods and earthquakes, but many of the collections, furniture, and vestments were able to be preserved. It went through five incarnations until it became the church you see today. In 1851 the mission was assigned to the Jesuit priests, who are a Roman Catholic order. They are well known as educators and scholars. They founded a college and in 1912, it became Santa Clara University. The cross in the front of the church was part of old church rafters. Today the mission is a Parish church and is is used as the University chapel.
