Artist's Description

A foggy day finds this vintage Standard OIl sign tacked up on a building in Cuyama, California. The round sign has rusted and deteriorated in the weather. Standard Oil was the predecessor of Exxon Oil and Chevron Oil. It was started in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller. The company grew so big that by 1904 it owned most of the refined oil in the United States. The Supreme Court broke up the company into smaller companies in 1911.
