We found these six water lilies floating in a small pond in Los Angeles. Water lilies are often seen in ornamental freshwater gardens where they float on the surface of the water. The stalks of the flowers are hollow tubes which transfer air from the water's surface. The roots of the plant are buried in the mud below. The flat, round leaves are green on the top and purple underneath. They are notched to drain off water. They provide shade for the water creatures below. Water birds also like to hunt on the flat surfaces of the leaves. The large flowers can bloom during the day or at night, and come in a variety of colors. They are showy and fraqtant, but only bloom a few days. The water lily is a symbol of rebirth. It is a symbol of resurrection and enlightenment in the Buddhist and Hindu religions.

As fifth generation Californian, I mostly specialize in California photography. I am are inspired by the landscapes and seascapes of the Pacific Coast and its beach communities. However, my galleries also show an eclectic mix of images with a variety of subjects and places. When I visit an area, I try to tell the story of that area with images. I may take the “big” image of the location, but we will also look for what is overlooked, for the things that make an area unique and finish the story. I often use close cropping and square format to zero in on a subject, making a tiny piece of the whole become the new focus. I like to capture details such as color, patterns and textures.
