Description
I like to get up close and personal with birds. This particular water bird is called a Double-crested Cormorant. He gets his name from the curved tufts of feathers on the crown of his head. These feathers can be either black or white, but are only seen during the breeding season., One remarkable feature is his jewel-like turquoise eyes, surrounded by a silvery green circle. For fun, if you opened his mouth, you would see a blue lining inside! His beak has a curved hook at the end, and he holds his head in an upward tilt. He also has a yellow patch of skin at the base of his bill and throat. He is a stocky bird with a long neck and black webbed feet. His feathers are black and brown, with a greenish or bronze gloss during breeding season. The feathers are not very waterproof, so you will often see cormorants holding their wings out to dry after foraging for food. Double-crested cormorants are gregarious and nest in large communities in trees. They are excellent fishermen.
