This female anhinga was perched in a tree at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Titusville, Florida. The female has a buffy colored neck and breast, a long tail, and a pointed spear-like bill. Her body is long and narrow, measuring in at about 35 inches. Her wing span expands to 45". These birds swim very low in the water, spearing fish and frogs with their pointed bills. They like the fresh water habitats of swamps. You can find them along the Gulf Coast and throughout Florida.
