Description
This strange looking bird is called an Anhinga. His breeding costume is black with silvery spots and streaks on his wings and upper back. He also sports fun wiggly plumes on his head and neck. His spear-like beak, and the bare skin on his face, are brightly colored during breeding. His neck and tail are longer than a Cormorants, which is how you can tell them apart.
These birds are found throughout Florida and the gulf coast. They prefer the freshwater areas of swamps. They swim low or submerged in the water, spearing frogs and fish with their pointed bills. Their broad wings can span up to 45", with a body length of 36". You will often see the Anhinga with its wings spread out to dry like this one.
Female Anhingas look different from the males. They have a buffy-colored neck and breast, while immature birds are browner. Both sexes have long bodies and necks that stretch out when they fly, which has given them the nickname of "Snakebird".
