Mission San Francisco de Solano, nick-named Mission Sonoma, was the 21st and the last mission built in California by the Spanish Franciscan padres. It is the farthest north of the chain of missions and was built because the Russians had established Fort Ross on the coast. It was the only mission that was constructed under Mexican rule, after Mexico gained independence from Spain. The mission only lasted 11 years. In 1833, the Mexican governor closed all of the missions and Mission Sonona became a parish church. In 1846, a small group of Americans started a rebellion (called the Bear Flag Rebellion) against the Mexican government. They wanted to make California an independent republic. The rebellion was short-lived because the US military stepped in and occupied the area. California was declared a state in 1850. Eventually, Mission Sonoma deteriorated until nothing was left. As fifth generation Californian, I mostly specialize in California photography. I am are inspired by the landscapes and seascapes of the Pacific Coast and its beach communities. However, my galleries also show an eclectic mix of images with a variety of subjects and places. When I visit an area, I try to tell the story of that area with images. I may take the “big” image of the location, but we will also look for what is overlooked, for the things that make an area unique and finish the story.
