Description
When Charles Tiffany stared his store in 1837, he wanted something to break up the plain facade of the building. He hired his friend, Henry Fredereck, to carve a figure of Atlas out of wood. He put the 9' tall Atlas over the door, and later added a 4' round, cast iron clock to sit on his shoulder. The figure moved with Tiffany from store to store as the business grew. Atlas, with his clock burden, became a symbol for Tiffany's along with the turquoise-green color.
