Description
The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse sits on a headland bluff at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, near Mendocino, California. The area was discovered by Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo in 1542, but was not surveyed until 1873. The explorer was the first European to land on the west coast of the US. Much later, when the clipper ship "Frolic" wrecked on a trip to China, salvage crews discovered virgin stands of timber in the area. In order to get the timber to the market, a lighthouse was needed, along with transport ships. The area was surveyed in 1873, but the lighthouse was not built until 1909. The historic red-roofed building is both a lighthouse and a fog signal building. It sends light 13-15 miles out into the ocean in order to guide ships at sea.
