Description
Fleur means flower in the French language, and lis means lily. In France this symbol represented nobility; it was both politcal and religious. In Louisiana the fleur-de-lis is mostly found along the Mississippi River where the French Colonials settled. In 2008 Governor Bobby Jindal, offically made the fleur-de-lis a symbol of Louisiana. It is on the flag and the seal of Louisiana. The stylized flower is found all over the city of New Orleans. It represents the recovery from Hurricane Katrina. It is a symbol of the New Orleans Saints and The University of Louisiana. It is also a symbol of the Cajun and Creole people. In a sad part of American history, the fleur-de -is was also branded on slaves for running away.
