Description
The fleur-de-Lis is found all over New Orleans, Louisiana and this stiched cloth flag is no exception. Fleur means flower in the French language and lis means lily. In France this symbol represented the monarchy, it was both politcal and religious. In Louisiana the fleur-de -is is mostly found along the Mississippi River where the French Colonials settled. In 2008 Governor Bobby Jindal, offically made the fleur-de-lis a symbol of Louisiana. It is on the flag and the seal of Louisiana. The stylized flower also represents the recovery from Hurricane Katrina. It is a symbol of the New Orleans Saints and The University of Louisiana. It is also a symbol of the Cajun and Creole people. In a darker part of American history, the fleur-de-lis was also branded on slaves for running away.
