Description
Where there is water on the gulf coast of the United States, there are pelicans. Way back in the colonial times, the Europeans were taken with the nuturing and attention the pelicans gave to their young. The pelican was designated as Louisiana's state bird in 1966. The symbol can be found on the state seal, the state flag, the state painting, and on the US Mint bicentennial quarter of the state of Louisiana.
