Description
The richly painted pavilion housing the bronze Korean Friendship Bell was a gift given to the people of the United States by the Republic of Korea. It celebrates the 1976 bicentennial of the United States and honors Veterans of the Korean war. It also represents friendship between the two countries. The historical monument sits on top of a bluff in Angel's Gate Park in San Pedro, California. It overlooks the harbor from which US troops once sailed into the Pacific. The structure is supported by 12 red columns representing the Korean zodiac, each one is guarded by a stone animal. The surface of the bell is intricately decorated in relief. It doesn't have a clapper, but the bell is rung by striking it with a stick. It is rung 5 times a year: New Year's Eve, Korean American Day, American Independence Day, Korean Liberation Day, and Constitution Day.
